The vast majority of people who enrol in self-paced e-learning never actually complete it. This is not necessarily because the content is poor. It’s because nobody notices when they stop.
That’s the problem we set out to solve when we developed our presentation skills programme. Spread over 28 days, it takes about 15 hours in total to complete, and most of the learning is done independently: watching videos, doing exercises and preparing your talk. However, the self-study element is supported by group sessions with 6–8 colleagues.
* On Day 1, you meet the group and state what you want to improve. A virtual facilitator gives the group a number of challenges, and together they define what makes a great presenter.
* Days 2–13 are for self-study, where you receive tips and tricks on how to present effectively.
* On Day 14, you meet again, this time with a live speaker coach, to ask questions and check in on your goals.
* Days 15–20: self-study and preparation of a short talk.
* On Day 21, you give your presentation to the group and receive their feedback. (A virtual facilitator will help the group along the way.)
* On Day 28, you have a coaching session with a speaker coach, during which you deliver your well-prepared talk and receive feedback. You then create a second version of part of the talk, incorporating the feedback.
Collaboration changes everything. Once you know that seven people are going to watch you present in a week’s time, self-study becomes essential. You familiarise yourself with the material. You rehearse. You show up prepared. Collaboration creates commitment because you have told others what you are working on. It also creates a safe audience of people who are in the same situation as you and want you to succeed.
By the time you reach the individual coaching session on Day 28, you will already have practised in front of real people and received feedback on your performance. The coaching builds on this experience instead of starting from scratch.
Motivation rarely comes from the material itself. It comes from the people you’re doing it with — at least that’s our secret!
